The Science Behind Sustainable Destruction
When used as directed, SafeMedWaste provides fast, safe onsite destruction of compatible controlled substance wastage. The patented chemical digestion technology is built on proven science and backed by the highest standard of independent product testing in the industry. Onsite destruction with SafeMedWaste results in a solidified byproduct that is non-hazardous, cannot be used to resynthesize the original drug, and presents no drug related risks for humans, animals, or the environment.
The SafeMedWaste Difference
ADSORPTION
Charcoal disposal products rely on adsorption to bond drug molecules to to the surface of the charcoal. Because charcoal cannot destroy the drug molecule, desorption of the active drug is still possible.
ABSORPTION
Absorption based disposal products capture and distribute drug molecules throughout the whole of the product. These products sequester the drug to make it harder to retrieve, but do not destroy the drug molecule.
DESTRUCTION
SafeMedWaste uses a patented chemical digestion technology to quickly break the primary bonds of the drug molecules. The molecules are reduced to their basic elements, which are primarily organic matter.
The Importance of Testing
Every controlled substance on the Compatible Drug List has been tested by a highly accredited, third-party laboratory to insure safe, reliable destruction with SafeMedWaste.
HPLC-MS/MS and HPLC-DAD
After controlled substances are destroyed by SafeMedWaste, the byproduct is tested using HPLC-MS/MS and/or HPLC-DAD. HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) separates different components of the byproduct to allow accurate identification of the molecular mass and structural information of those components. The high detection sensitivity of MS (Mass Spectrometry) provides reliable assurance that the drug molecule has been fully destroyed.

View Competitor Chromatograms. Competitive products were tested by an independent DEA-licensed laboratory with a select sample of drugs. All products were used in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions.
GC-MS Off-Gassing Studies
Off-gassing studies of controlled substance excipients added to SafeMedWaste show that no hazardous, volatile, or flammable vapors are released. GC-MS (Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry) is used to effectively analyze any headspace gas produced after an excipient is added to SafeMedWaste. The headspace gas is first separated by GC (Gas Chromatography) into different gaseous components so that MS(Mass Spectrometry) can be used to analyze, quantify, and identify the individual components based on comparison of their unique mass-to-charge ratios against known standards. The full Off-Gassing Report is available for review by qualified interested parties.
TCLP Test
TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) is a chemical analysis process that simulates landfill conditions to determine the type and concentration of EPA identified hazardous elements a substance releases in leachate. TCLP testing of activated SafeMedWaste showed no hazardous elements in the leachate. The complete TCLP report is available for review by qualified interested parties.
Method 1040
The EPA Method 1040 test is used to evaluate the potential of an oxidizing solid waste to increase the burn rate or intensity of a combustible substance. SafeMedWaste was tested with certain controlled substances that are listed as hazardous under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). These drugs are D001 listed as flammable substances due to the alcohol content of the drug in liquid form. When used with SafeMedWaste, the resulting byproduct does not ignite or burn at rates above the standard, and is classified as a Category IV non-oxidizer. The full 1040 Certificate is available for review by qualified interested parties.
SafeMedWaste
This powerful new onsite destruction technology was designed to reduce risk exposure and make management of controlled substance wastage safer, easier, and more cost-effective. SafeMedWaste’s performance and reliability claims are supported by the most comprehensive independent validation testing in the industry.
