Compatible Controlled Substance List

Every controlled substance on the SafeMedWaste Compatible Drug List has been tested by a third-party FDA-registered, cGLP-certified, DEA-licensed laboratory to ensure safety and destruction efficacy when used with SafeMedWaste. The testing process also confirms that the byproduct of the destruction process is non-hazardous and cannot be used to resynthesize the controlled substance.

Validation testing of Schedule I-V controlled substances is ongoing. Controlled substances are prioritized for testing based on how widely the drug is used and the potential for abuse. To request testing status of drugs not currently on the compatible drug list, please submit a request on our CONNECT PAGE.

IMPORTANT: Controlled substance scheduling is subject to change, and substances that are not scheduled by DEA may be subject to scheduling at the state level. To ensure compliance and safe management of controlled substance wastage, do not use the SafeMedWaste Compatible Drug List schedule categorizations for identification, classification, or related regulatory management of drugs or drug waste/wastage in registrant facilities. Always refer to the appropriate facility and regulatory entities for guidance.

Schedule I

In general, these drugs have no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.

Schedule II

Dangerous drugs with high potential for abuse and dependence.

Schedule III

Drugs with a moderate to low potential for abuse and dependence.

Schedule IV

Drugs with a low potential for abuse and dependence.

Schedule V

Drugs with a lower potential for abuse than Schedule IV drugs, which contain limited quantities of specific narcotics.

Not DEA Scheduled

Drugs that are not DEA listed as Schedule I-V but have potential for abuse and dependence. Some states require these drugs to be managed as controlled substances.
