Columbia, S.C. (May 6, 2020) Like many communities dealing with the effects of COVID-19, the Columbia, SC area needed help. Booker T Washington Neighborhood Association President, Regina Williams, reached out asking for help finding healthcare masks, and Senator Tim Scott’s office quickly jumped into action connecting Okra Medical with Regina and her neighborhood community.

“We are a part of such a great state-wide community in South Carolina, and having the resources to help was an opportunity to give back and truly an honor,” said Okra Medical’s CEO Marshall Hartmann.

Okra Medical donated 18,500 healthcare masks to the Richland County community through the Booker T Washington Neighborhood Association, North Columbia Youth Empowerment Initiative, Richland County Sheriff’s office and the City of Columbia Police Department. An additional 2,500 healthcare masks were donated to the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

“It’s wonderful to see the positive, working relationships between Sheriff Leon Lott, Chief Skip Holbrook and the residents of Richland County,” said Hartmann.

In March 2020, Okra Medical was gearing up to launch its product SafeMedWaste which completely destroys highly addictive pharmaceuticals like opioids. Then COVID-19 struck. Wanting to find a way to continue paying their employees, Okra Medical leveraged international relationships to secure health care masks and began selling and donating them to hospitals and organizations in need. Okra Medical has donated more than 100,000 masks as of May 7, 2020.
